LEON CAMPHER ASISA, CEO
Leon will give a brief overview of the work that ASISA is doing on behalf of the savings and investment industry. From the ASISA 2011 Annual Review “In three short years, ASISA has grown from being the new kid on the block to a formidable partner at Government’s negotiation table. Empowered by a mandate from an industry that manages assets of more than R4 trillion, ASISA is considered the custodian of the nation’s savings and its members are recognised as one of the country’s biggest contributors to the national GDP. ASISA has proven that it has a positive role to play in a time when our industry, our country and the globe are facing massive change.” (DR JOHAN VAN ZYL, Chairman of ASISA and Group Chief Executive, Sanlam Limited).
SOMETHING ABOUT LEON: Leon was instrumental in the formation of ASISA and was appointed CEO on 1 October 2008. After graduating from Stellenbosch University Leon joined Old Mutual in the Investment division. During his thirteen years with Old Mutual he was an Investment Analyst and Portfolio Manager. In 1985 he left Old Mutual to form Syfrets Managed Assets where he was Portfolio Manager and CEO. In 1993 Leon left Syfrets and was one of the founding members of Coronation where he was CEO of Coronation Fund Managers and Executive Director of Coronation Holdings. During his time with Coronation he was also one of the founders of African Harvest and served as a Director of African Harvest. In 2003 Leon was instrumental in the formation of the Investment Management Association South Africa where he served as CEO until 2008.
RICHARD CARTER Allan Gray Life, Director
Richard will discuss “Planning for income post retirement”.
His presentation will include:
- Helping your clients make the right choices at retirement
- The role of conventional and living annuities
- Managing retirement income in the face of low interest rates, increasing longevity and volatile markets.
SOMETHING ABOUT RICHARD: Richard is part of Allan Gray’s institutional client servicing team. He joined Allan Gray in 2007 after working for several years in financial services in the UK. Richard completed his B Bus Sc degree at UCT and is a qualified actuary.

Rose and Peter will discuss “Financial Planning - what does the future hold?” This presentation will include:
- International trends and how this can influence the South African environment
- The intermediary remuneration process and the latest thinking in South Africa
- Key challenges facing intermediaries
SOMETHING ABOUT ROSE: Rosemary practised as an attorney in Gauteng for 9 years. After moving to Cape Town she held various legal and compliance positions at The Southern Life and Old Mutual. In 2003 she was appointed by the Minister of Finance to the FAIS Advisory Committee on which she currently serves. Rosemary joined ASISA in June 2011, as a Senior Policy Advisor, where she is responsible for co-ordinating the industry’s responses to various National Treasury Policy initiatives as set out in their “A safer financial sector to serve South Africa better” and various subsequent discussion papers. Rose focuses on regulatory developments in Financial Services in South Africa, the UK, EU and Australia, with her particular interest being market conduct. Rose holds a BA LLB (Wits) degree and ILPA (Life & Pensions).

SOMETHING ABOUT PETER: Peter is a Senior Policy Advisor at ASISA where his main focus areas are marketing and distribution matters, international trends in financial services, treating customers fairly, tax, living annuity and universal disclosure standards, protection of personal information and Retirement Funds. Previously he worked for a large financial services company for almost 30 years as a legal adviser, senior legal adviser, manager and then head of product legal services. He holds a BA LLB degree from Stellenboch University and is a member of the Financial Planning Institute. He is also an admitted attorney.
